IST

I just learned that apparently Indian Standard Time (IST) is GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) + 5 hours and 30 mins. They also don't do daylight savings time. While I love all things India (or so I think having never been to the country) I did not know this nor the fact that apparently other countries such as Nepal are 45 mins off. When I saw this I had to of course google it to figure out why. Apparently, in 1884 when GMT was established the world was divided into 24 time zones differing an hour each from GMT. India, however, stradles two time zones...GMT +5 and GMT +6. So in order to keep the time uniform throughout the country they chose to split the difference. Interesting.

*Disclaimer* This is Kari posting (of course) I'm sure Spencer knew this already :)
